Why Ukrainians Are Protesting: The Story Behind Fedorov’s Removal
Who Is Mykhalio Federov?
Federov is only 35 but led Ukraine’s Ministry of Digital Transformation. He pushed digital procurement reforms,
anti‑corruption audits, drone warfare expansion, and data‑driven military planning. He also famously persuaded Elon Musk to restrict Russian access to Starlink while supplying terminals to keep Ukraine online.
Why was Federov fired?
One of the main reasons Mykhalio Federov was fired was because of a deep conflict with Commander‑in‑Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi. Syrskyi opposed Fedorov’s tech‑driven reforms.
Fedorov accused Syrskyi of sabotaging modernization, blocking reforms, and “splitting the country.” The feud escalated until Zelenskyy had to choose one side — and he chose Syrskyi. The prime minister had Yulia Svryydenko resigned, giving Zelenskyy political cover to remove Fedorov as part of a larger reset. Another reason Federov was fired was because of fears Fedorov was becoming a political rival. Analysts noted Zelenskyy may have wanted to sideline a rising, popular figure who symbolized reform and a European future.
Why Ukrainians are protesting
The protests are large by wartime standards — thousands in Kyiv alone. People see Fedorov as: honest,
modern, competent, and crucial to Ukraine’s future. Many fear his removal signals a return of Soviet-style military thinking, weakening anti‑corruption efforts, and political infighting at a dangerous moment in the war.
